Below you'll find a table showing the results of the 2010 survey on broadband speeds conducted by Ofcom. Key points to take away from the survey are:
Cable broadband services advertised at a particular speed delivered significantly faster actual broadband speeds than the equivalent ADSL broadband services.
Virgin Media’s "up to" 10M bit/s and "up to" 20Mbit/s cable services delivered average download speeds around twice as fast as ADSL services with similar headline speeds.
Cable broadband services on average delivered higher download speeds at all times of the day than comparable ADSL services. However, cable showed a greater slowdown during peak periods than some ADSL broadband providers.
The actual broadband speed obtained is often a lot less than the advertised speed. For ADSL broadband, the cause of this is usually down to the copper phone line connecting the user to the local phone exchange. The longer the line and the greater the electrical interference on the line, the slower the broadband speed obtained.
Virgin Media’s "up to" 50Mbit/s cable broadband service was the fastest service tested, giving average download speeds of around 36Mbit/s on single thread tests and around 46Mbit/s on multi-thread tests conducted between 4 and 6am.
